Touch screen technology has been with us since the early 1970s and have become increasingly popular in recent years with the advent of mobile phones and pocket computer systems.

The most obvious advantage of touch screen monitors is that they act as both an input and output device. Using a graphical user interface (GUI) there is no need for a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse as the touch screen monitor acts as all three.

In industrial applications, touch screen monitors also have the advantage of being more robust than a conventional CRT (cathode ray tube) or LCD monitor. Touchscreens are often built with durability in mind and many are resistant to industrial contaminants such as water, dirt, oil and grease.

Many touchscreen monitors boast IP65 and NEMA 4 ratings allowing the monitors to be washed-down and protected against, electrical surges, physical impact, temperature extremes, theft, tampering and airborne debris.

Touchscreen monitors can also reduce the size of a computer system, without separate peripherals and all those wires, they can also be mounted on walls or on the back of machines.

They can also be house in industrial computer enclosures - these afford added protection from spillages, knocks, bangs and even explosive atmospheres. Many touchscreen devices are used where standard computer equipment is just not practical such as when a machine is positioned outside or left unattended.

There are different technologies behind touch screen monitors such as resistive touchscreens, capacitive systems, infrared and surface acoustic wave technology. The types of touchscreen
Differ in their efficiency at reading a touch and the clarity of the monitor. Some of the systems are also more susceptible to scratches and contaminants.

Uses of Touch Screen Monitors

The touch screen monitor has been around almost as long as computers themselves. Invented in 1971 by Dr Samuel Hurst they have found a use in a wide variety of applications.

The main advantage of a touch screen monitor is that it both acts as an input and output device. A single touch screen monitor can replace an existing CRT (cathode ray tube), plasma or LCD monitor and replace the keyboard and mouse too.

Touch screen monitors work by a variety of different methods but the basic function of using a graphical user interface (GUI) that is sensitive to touch is fundamental to all approaches.

Recognising a person's touch is done by several methods, the most common being resistive, capacitive, infrared and acoustic wave.

Different methods are used for the different functions that a touch screen may be required to fulfill. For instance, resistive touch screens work by using conductive and a resistive metallic layers between a sheet of normal glass. An electrical current runs through the two layers and when a user touches the screen, interference in the electrical field is caused and the computer then calculates the coordinates.

Resistive touch screens are quite durable although they can be scratched which can reduce their efficiency but overall they are the most versatile system.

While surface acoustic wave technology used in some touch screens uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the panel. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed and this can be measured identifying the location of the touch. Unfortunately surface wave panels are easily damaged and contaminants on the surface will hinder its function but they offer a higher clarity than the resistive system making them better suited to laboratory work.

Capacitive touch screens that use an electrical charge that is soaked up when a user touches it rather than being resisted like a resistive system makes them more durable. Capacitive touch screens are therefore a mainstay of industrial computers because of their durability and their imperviousness to moisture, dirt and grease. Other touch screen technology including infra-red or strain gauge are used too but are less common.

Touch screens are a viable alternative to the standard monitor, mouse and keyboard assembly adding better durability and resistance to contaminants whilst also forgoing the need for wires and peripherals making them ideal for industrial or manufacturing purposes.

How the Touch Screen Monitor Works

There are three commonly used types of touch screen technologies:

Resistive Touch Screen Monitor

Resistive Capacitive Surface acoustic wave

Resistive Touch Screen Monitor

1. The resistive type uses a normal glass panel, that is covered by a resistive and a conductive metallic layer and a protective layer (scratch resistant) on top of all this. When you touch the screen, the two metallic layers are joined and the change in electrical field is detected. The circuit on the monitor then calculates the coordinates and transfer them to the touch screen software. Touch screen driver transfers the information about the coordinates to the OS, in a form of events similar to mouse clicks and drags.

This system registers a touch event as soon the surfaces are joined. This means, you can use a finger, a pen or any other item as input. This also makes it most vulnerable to physical damage by sharp objects. The metallic layers only transmit about 75% of the light from the monitor, making its display clarity the lowest of the three.

2. With the capacitive type, a layer storing electrical charge, is placed on the monitor glass. When you touch the layer, a small amount of the electrical charge is transferred to you, decreasing the charge on the layer. Sensors, located at the corners of the monitor, detect a change in electrical charge levels and transfer the information to the touch screen software to process.

The biggest advantage of capacitive type over resistive is that it has 90% light throughput, while the resistive. This gives the capacitive touch screen monitors a much clearer picture. Since this type uses electric charge to detect a touch event, you must use a conductive input, such as a finger.

3. The surface acoustic wave type uses two transducers and a reflector, all placed on the monitor glass plate. One transducer is sending electrical signals to the other and the reflector reflects this signal.

The receiving transducer is capable of detecting and locating any touch event. Since this type has no metallic layers placed on the display surface, they have 100% light throughput, and therefore the most clear picture. Similar to resistive, this type detects touch events by almost any object, except very small or hard items, such as a pen.

These are just the most commonly used types. There are many other touchscreen technologies out there, such as strain gauge configuration (from 1960's) or relatively-modern optical imaging technology. And new ones are being developed as we speak.

Touchscreen technology has seen a lot of progress during the last few years.

The iPhone has made a revolution in hardware as well as touch screen software. And surveys are showing significant rise in demand for touchscreens computers, for users of laptops, as well as desktop computers.
Perhaps, the time to put the mouse away, is finally coming.

What's Touch Screen Monitor?

Touch screen monitor is a type of display screen that has a touch-sensitive transparent panel covering the screen. Instead of using a pointing device such as a mouse or light pen, you can use your finger to point directly to objects on the screen.

The benefits of such technology are obvious. Rather than lugging along extra input devices such as a mouse or a keyboard, the user need only his finger to manipulate the chosen device. But it's not just mobile devices that benefit from this type of input. All kinds of devices can be equipped, including TV and computer monitors, LCD screens, and the older CRT computer monitors. As a result, a bartender can press on a screen to ring up drinks on a busy night rather than type in a price, a nurse can input patient information with one hand. Truly, the possibilities with touch screen monitors are endless.

Resistive Touch Screen Monitor

Touch screen monitors usually come in three varieties that enable it to recognize a person's touch. These are resistive, capacitive and surface acoustic wave. The resistive type works by having two panels with a thin space between them. When the user presses the screen, the two panels touch at that point, and the exact coordinates are then registered with the computer.

A capacitive system runs a small electrical charge throughout the touch screen. When the user touches the chosen area, some of the electrical charge is distributed to the finger, lessening the charge at that location. The coordinates are again recorded and sent to the computer. This type of touch screen produces a clearer picture because it transmits more light and doesn't require two panels.

Finally, the surface acoustic wave system is the best, and results in the clearest picture. Transducers are used to send electrical signals across the screen, and if a user touches the screen, they can determine where based on how the electrical signal is received from one transducer to the other.

Since the capacitive system must have a finger to absorb electricity, most non-living objects won't register as a touch. Resistive and surface acoustic wave systems on the other hand react to just about any form of pressure. Each has its different advantages as a result, and manufacturers will only find new ways to make use of them.

Finally, although touch screens provide a natural interface for computer novices, they are unsatisfactory for most applications because the finger is such a relatively large object. It is impossible to point accurately to small areas of the screen. In addition, most users find touch screens tiring to the arms after long use.

Types of Industrial Touch Screen Monitors

Dr. Samuel C. Hurst invented touch screen monitors in 1971 and since then they have become increasingly popular, particularly in commercial computing such as ATMs and ticket machines and also in mobile phone and PDA technologies.

Resistive Touch Screen Monitor

Touch screen monitors combine both an input and output device, minimizing the need for separate peripherals like keyboard, mouse and monitor. Instead a user merely has to touch the monitor with either a finger or sometimes a stylus at manipulate the graphical user interface.

Touch screen monitors use one of a number of technological systems to recognize a person's touch the most common being resistive, capacitive, infrared and acoustic wave.

Resistive touch screens are the most versatile, they consist of a normal glass plate that is covered with both a conductive and a resistive metallic layers. The two layers are spaced apart and an electrical current runs through them while the monitor is running. When a user touches the screen, the layers make contact in that exact spot causing interference in the electrical field, the computer then calculates the coordinates.

The only downsides to this system are that the multiple layers restrict about a quarter of the light transmitted by the monitor and they can also be easily scratched which reduces their efficiency.

The capacitive system differs by having a layer that stores an electrical charge placed on the glass panel of the monitor. When someone touches the panel, some of the charge is transferred to the user, so the overall charge on the layer decreases, this can be measured by circuits and calculated by the computer as to where the touch took place. The capacitive system also allows a lot more light to be transmitted from the monitor than the resistive system.

Capacitive touch screens are a lot more durable and resistant to contaminant than the resistive system. They are a more popular for industrial and outdoor applications because of their durability and their imperviousness to moisture, dirt and grease.

Surface acoustic wave technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed, like the current in a capacitive system and this can be measured identifying the location of the touch.

Surface wave panels can be easily damaged and contaminants on the surface will hinder its functionality but it offers higher clarity and optical accuracy than the other systems.

Infrared touch screens employ two different methods. One measures warmth of a person's touch to the surface layer. This method requires warm hands and users cannot wear gloves or use a stylus. Another method is to use a light beam near the surface of the screen the infrared is used to measure when that light beam is broken by touching the monitor. IR touch screens are the most durable but can be slow to respond.

Other systems include strain gauge, where the screen is spring mounted on the four corners and the movement is measured when the screen is touched. This technology is heavily durable and resistant to vandalism.
